Claims & Corrections
...from Mr. Enslow's website (and a couple of my own)
Flooding
This is a team effort, but it is well known that I have had a role as Chair of the Pierce County River Revitalization Task Force and Co-Chair of the Puyallup River Task Force here in Sumner. In general, the recommendations acted on by Council came from the combined efforts of many people.
Jobs, trails, sidewalks, water, parks, low taxes, merged fire department, etc.
Council has facilitated most of these items, but the sidewalk issue has been a top priority of mine since 1998 when I was on the planning commission and more seriously when I was elected in 2003. Please see http//sumner.fileprosite.com for details from the record.
Balanced Budget
It is state law to have a balanced budget in any economy, or else the city gets audited.
City budgets will continue to be balanced in cooperation with the Council.
YMCA
This has been a team effort and we have worked in different ways to make this happen. For my part, I was successful in amending the PCRC recommendations on Urban Growth Boundaries last month to make room for the YMCA in Sumner. This was a critical step.
Golf Course/Green Space
The golf course is currently in the proposed MIC overlay area. MIC policies clearly state the prohibition of land uses which are not compatible with manufacturing/industrial, manufacturing/industrial supportive, and advanced technology uses. If the golf course is to remain, why is it being overlaid with the Manufacturing/ Industrial Center designation? What will happen to the golf course or parks and trails in the MIC area?
Claim: Community Garden Support?
Mr. Enslow is on record opposing the Community Garden at study session and council meetings, where it was discussed. Please see http//sumner.fileprosite.com to check the record.
Sound Transit Mega-Parking Garage on Traffic Ave.
It is well know that Mr. Enslow has proposed and supported a 500-stall, 5-story parking garage on Traffic Avenue for the last 4 years. The last time Council had a report on his board activities was in 2006. Since then, we've only heard from Sound Transit on what they what, rather than a discussion on what is best for Sumner and the residents.
Correction; My Parking Proposal
My proposal is to have a regional parking facility across from Mama Stortinis, between Sumner and Puyallup, at the end of the Shaw road extension from South Hill. This saves our downtown, prevents a further traffic mess, and allows for a long term and regional solution. Sound Transit studies on rider demand, traffic, and parking show that if a garage was built on Traffic Avenue, by the time it was completed, it would be full as early as Day One.
Correction; Chemical Tank Farms
Mr. Allsop stated correctly that chemical tank farms for noxious or poisonous chemicals are prohibited in Sumner, a ban that was put into place roughly 2 years ago. Non-noxious chemicals can be stored at tank farm facilities or processing plants (like we see at the Port of Tacoma). Industrial companies pursue their own agenda and are good at threatening lawsuits to expand their operations. The Council's recent record in standing up to these types of threats has been weak.
